Richard J. Lorenzen

Richard J. Lorenzen, 69, of Boulder, CO passed away Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Boulder Community Foothills Hospital.

Richard was born April 24, 1948 in San Mateo, CA. Growing up in San Francisco, CA and Denver, CO, he had been a resident of Boulder since the early 1970's.

Richard enjoyed a lifelong love of mathematics, physics and engineering, graduating from Colorado School of Mines and pursuing advanced degrees from Stanford University and the University of Colorado. Following an internship at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Richard began his career at The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder and continued on in research and exploration around the world. He was an avid outdoorsman and experienced mountaineer, having scaled his first peak, the Grand Teton, at age 17. Richard was also an ham radio operator for decades and was active in and supported the Boulder Amateur Radio Club.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, Edwin N. Lorenzen and his mother, Rhoda C. Lorenzen. Richard is survived by his brother Robert Lorenzen of Fairway, KS. A small family service will be held at a later date.
