Joyce E. (Joy) Hinkelman, 89, of Boulder passed away July 28, 2014 at Alta Vita Memory Care Center in Longmont. Joy was born April 16, 1925 to Paul A. and Bertha Mae Thompson in Charlotte, NC Joy met her loving husband Jack while he was a naval officer stationed in Charleston, SC after WWII. Joy was a professional dancer and a stewardess for National Airlines. She was stationed in Miami, one of the first stews on the east coast routes from New York to Havana. Joy married Jack in 1949 in Pensacola, FL, their marriage continued for 62 years. They moved from place to place with the Navy including Florida, California, Virginia, and Maryland. After Jack’s naval retirement, they moved to Boulder in 1963 where they raised their family. They loved to travel the world, including trips to Africa, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and many European countries. Joy was a fun loving, charming and energetic woman. Pretty and witty, she made everyone laugh, she loved to tease people. Her creativity and vitality were displayed through decorating, fashion and style, arts and crafts, and various business adventures. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to open several businesses (The Pink Poodle, Joy’s Sample Shop, Morning Star Enterprises) and a dance studio. Joy had a passion for so many activities throughout her years. She loved to paint, gardening, sewing, dancing, playing bridge, bowling and she enjoyed making the holidays magical for her family. Joy was an avid and talented golfer. She and Jack were members of the Boulder Country Club for 42 years. Joy won many awards including the senior club championship; she was a well-recognized golfer at the club. Joy was a spirited competitor and taught many family members how to play golf. Her last years were extremely happy at Alta Vita Memory Care where she met and made new friends. The residents and staff became her family. We are so grateful for all they did for her.
