Historian John Hamilton Monnett passed away on April 27, 2024. Born to Howard and Hazel Monnett in Kansas City, MO, John attended Shawnee Mission North High School in Overland Park, KS before attending the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS.
John received his Master’s Degree from the University of California at San Jose and his Doctor of Education degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO.
John’s interest in Native American History led to his professional career. He became Emeritus Professor of History at Metropolitan State University, Denver, CO. John served as Director of Continuing Education at Community College of Denver, CO. In Douglas, AZ he was a Professor of History. John wrote eight books, primarily about the Indian Wars, with the Northern Cheyenne the main focus.
He and his wife, Linda Chambers Monnett, whom he married December 29, 1973, in Douglas, AZ, enjoyed many travels in the Southwest. Santa Fe and Taos were their peaceful places.
They moved from Bisbee, AZ to Colorado where they raised their son Darren. The family remembers John as an avid trout fisherman. His great joys were his son and grandchildren Troy and Ariel.
John was a member of Westerners International, Western Writers of America, Western History Association and Order of the Indian Wars.
John is survived by his wife Linda, of Lafayette, CO. Their son Darren and daughter-in-law Angelidia, along with grandchildren Troy and Ariel Monnett, live in Glenn Heights, TX.
A celebration of John’s life is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, 1-4 p.m. at 2546 Dutch Court, Lafayette, CO. Memorial contributions can be made in his name to the American Lung Association, www.lung.org.
