John B Judkins, Jr

John B. Judkins Jr. of Boulder passed away peacefully on December 8 at the age of 90 in the presence of two of his children and his wife Nancy. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2015, at 11:00 AM St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1419 Pine St, Boulder, CO 80302. John was born May 25, 1925 to John and Elizabeth (Smart) Judkins of Merrimac, Massachusetts, the son of a carriage maker turned custom car body manufacturer. He attended Milton Academy and then Harvard College, from which he graduated in 1948. On September 18, 1948 John married his college sweetheart Nancy Howland in Dayton, OH. They moved to the Chicago area for the beginning of his very successful 38 year career with the Inland Steel Company. Through his hard work, intelligence and considerable personal charm, John rose through the ranks of the company from salesman to manager of Inland Steel's tin division in New York to national sales manager and, finally to vice president of sales. During his working years, John and Nancy raised a family of four children and lived in Winnetka, Illinois, Darien, Connecticut and then Lake Forest, Illinois where they lived for 26 years until 1990. John was the coach of his children's sports teams, taught Sunday school, and was very active in the community..They moved to Boulder in 1990 to be nearer to their children and grandchildren. While living in Boulder, he worked for a national consulting company, taught a business class at University of Colorado, sold real estate and worked at Barnes & Noble's until he was near 80. John was an active Board member in the Chicago YMCA and Collage Children’s Museum in Boulder. John was never one to simply sit idle – he loved tennis, squash, golf, and hiking. John and Nancy were very fortunate to travel the world during their 67 years of marriage. He loved the social interaction with anyone he was around and was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. John and Nancy were members of several churches - John was a Vestry member and Sunday school teacher at St. Luke’s Parish of Darien, CT, the Church of the Holy Spirit of Lake Forest, IL and, most recently a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Boulder. He is survived by his wife Nancy Howland Judkins of Boulder; sons Jack (Sandy Gartzman) Judkins of Fairfax, CA, Peter (Mary Pat) Judkins of Boulder, CO; his two daughters Kathy Judkins of San Francisco, CA and Laurie (Calvin) Hanson of Boulder, CO, as well as, his sister, Consie Bowman, of Virginia, and her children Betsy Bowman and Bob Bowman and their families, and his nephew Mark Howland. John has eight grandchildren; Andy (Angela) Hanson, Julie Hanson, Willie Hanson, Sarah Judkins, Jeffrey Judkins, Jonathan Gartzman Judkins, Benjamin Gartzman Judkins and Sean Judkins-Boeri.
